Americans have become more positive towards mass deportations of illegal immigrants, particularly those who have committed crimes.
Most surprising is that support for deporting criminals has increased among Democrats, despite the media’s consistently negative coverage of Trump’s and ICE’s efforts to clean up after President Biden’s open-border policies.
Being present in the United States illegally is in itself a criminal offence, but here we are speaking of individuals who have also committed additional crimes.
A poll conducted by Harvard University/Harris found that around 80 per cent of voters supported deporting immigrants who are residing illegally in the United States and have committed crimes.
That is an increase of five percentage points from April, when 75 per cent of respondents supported giving “the worst of the worst” a one-way ticket out of the United States, writes the New York Post.
Perhaps most surprising was the growing support among Democrats, many of whom had previously been strongly opposed to President Trump’s nationwide measures against illegal immigration.
According to the poll, 71 per cent of Democrats now support deporting criminal immigrants, compared with 63 per cent in April, an increase of eight percentage points in just one month. That corresponds to around 32 million Democratic voters.
Support among Republicans remained consistently high, but still rose from 89 per cent in April to 90 per cent in May. The share of independents in favour increased from 73 per cent in April to 79 per cent one month later.
When it comes to deporting all immigrants residing illegally in the country, 56 per cent of voters surveyed expressed support, a modest increase of one percentage point since April.
Support for deporting all illegal immigrants has nevertheless increased among both Democrats and independents. Among Democrats, 37 per cent now support this policy, up from 33 per cent in April. Among independent voters, support rose from 49 per cent to 53 per cent.
Last month, the Department of Homeland Security reported that more than three million illegal immigrants have left the United States or been deported since President Trump took office, writes The Post.
Of these, 2.2 million chose to self-deport through a programme in which they register via a DHS app in exchange for a cash stipend and a free flight home. A further 900,000 have been deported since 20 January 2025, and by May DHS had arrested 900,000 immigrants residing illegally in the United States.
