Armed individuals opened fire on Tuesday morning near the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Three of them were killed by the police, and two police officers were injured, reports Jerusalem Post.
The consulate is located in the Beşiktaş district of Istanbul. It is currently unclear whether the consulate was the target of the attack.
The consulate has been closed for at least two years and is likely unstaffed, a local resident informed Jerusalem Post.
A spokesperson for Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the incident is under investigation and confirmed that the consulate is presently unstaffed.
Footage is circulating online that is said to show some of what took place at the scene.
It is difficult not to view the shooting in connection with the Iran war and threats of retaliation against the outside world in general and Israel in particular.
