The EU will require a clear Iran plan from United States President Donald Trump before agreeing to the demand to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz.
Several other EU members that are also members of the alliance have reached the same conclusion.
Trump: Følger for NATO hvis ikke allierte hjelper til i Hormuzstredet
Trump has reacted, and earlier on Monday he warned of a “bleak future” for NATO if allies do not assist in keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for shipping.
– We have defended you, and then you will not involve yourselves, he says, addressing the United States’ allies.
– We strongly urge other nations to become involved, and quickly and with enthusiasm, Trump said at an event at the White House. (NTB-AP-AFP)
Several EU countries point to the uncertainty that prevails around the war in the Middle East. They ask the United States and Israel to make clear when they believe that the military objectives in the war against Iran have been achieved.
Germany’s Prime Minister Friedrich Merz is one of these politicians. At a press conference in Berlin on Monday afternoon he stated:
– We lack the mandate from the UN, the EU and NATO required by Germany’s constitution. It was therefore clear from the outset that this war is not a matter for NATO.
Therefore the United States and Israel must manage on their own in this conflict, Merz continued.
The meeting made it clear that there are divisions within the Union.
While Finland believes it has enough to deal with in the Baltic Sea, Austria prefers to focus on diplomatic solutions. Romania prioritises efforts in the Black Sea, while the Baltic states wish to maintain their focus on Ukraine.
Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna pointed out that if Trump wants NATO involved in Hormuz, there are procedures for this, while Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski noted that Trump had not activated the procedures.
France’s President Emmanuel Macron is not entirely dismissive, according to Trump, who also believes the British will change their position shortly.
– I think he is going to help, Trump said, adding that he also believes the United Kingdom will participate in a Hormuz operation, without elaborating.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen is also not as dismissive.
– We have not wanted this war, and we have called for de-escalation, but we will have to consider how we can contribute, he said before today’s meeting began.
