Denmark has sent 100 soldiers to Greenland. A drop in the ocean. But Denmark’s absence from Davos may have been a fatal mistake. The US is sending a huge delegation, including five ministers. Greenland will be high on the agenda. How will the Danes be heard from Copenhagen?
Whitaker says that Europeans have a tendency to overreact in relation to the US.
“Europe sometimes tends to overreact when an issue is put on the table,” Whitaker said. “This is one of those cases where it’s important to keep a cool head.”
Whitaker says that Europeans should concentrate on rearmament. Little Denmark can’t defend Greenland. Now Europeans are trying to make Greenland’s defence a NATO issue. But what good is that when Europeans have weak defences at home? It’s the US that has to make the biggest sacrifice anyway. The Europeans want to have their cake and eat it too. This is what Trump says must end.</p
“The most important thing we’re doing in NATO is, first of all, the US is strong. Nobody denies that. We have shown through Midnight Hammer, through what we did in Venezuela and elsewhere, that the United States is able to, and can, exercise power. We want all of our allies in NATO to be equally strong, and they are not at this time,” he said.
He added: “Some of them have clearly become more competent, and so you can’t just paint with a broad brush when it comes to all our NATO allies. But there are some who are not.”
Those who have a strong defence are Poland. The Nordic countries have a long way to go. It’s this weakness that hits Denmark in the centre.
“Europe and the EU need to untie their hands from behind their backs,” he continued. “They need to deregulate, they need to find more capital and economic growth, because at the end of the day that’s what’s going to enable them to deliver on the promises they’ve made to increase defence spending and therefore defence capability.”

<“One of the things I keep talking about with our friends in the EU,” Whitaker added, “is that they’ve got to get the economy moving, and there are proven and reliable ways to do that.”
Whitaker said his top priority is to ensure NATO allies follow through on the major defence commitments agreed in The Hague last year.
Trump got NATO countries to commit to increasing their defence budget to 5 percent, and Secretary General Mark Rutte is eternally grateful for that. Rutte owes Trump a debt of gratitude. He won’t forget it, even though politicians and media alike are aggrieved and feel he is letting Europe down.
NATO is a defence alliance, and Whitaker exposes the Europeans at home.
Europeans talk about principles and international law. But they have no problem trampling on the freedom of speech that Americans hold dear.
For four years, Europe has been talking about Ukraine in and out of breath. Russia is the enemy, and much of the propaganda is about portraying Russia as a threat. But when Trump talks about Russia in the north, the press ridicules his statements. They don’t realise that they themselves are in a glass house.
“This is number one on my list right now,” he said, “to make sure that the political commitments we made in The Hague are turned into real military capabilities in NATO.”
He said that proximity to Russia has influenced how seriously countries take the threat.
“Look at the Baltic countries, like Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, and look at the Nordic countries – they’re very aware of the threats that Russia [poses],” Whitaker said, citing Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and invasion of Ukraine in 2022.Whitaker skewers the Europeans at their own peril.</p
