Mette Frederiksen may have made the biggest blunder of all time by not going to Davos. Greenland’s fate may be sealed. The person who has taken on the job of facilitator is Secretary General Mark Rutte, who organises the meetings. Trump is staying the course. He thinks Greenland will fall into his lap.

“There’s no turning back, everyone agrees on that,” he writes.

He also writes that he has spoken to the head of NATO and is planning a meeting with various parties in Davos, Switzerland.

Soon after, he also posted a photo of himself planting an American flag in Greenland with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance in the background. A sign reads “Greenland, U.S. territory since 2026”.

European countries seem to think Trump is bluffing. Trump isn’t bluffing, but the path to the goal may change. Now the Danes and the seven other countries that sent soldiers to Nuuk have received punitive tariffs, and they were rightly offended. But Trump felt that the deployment was aimed at him. They were to defend the island against American soldiers.

This misunderstanding has probably been cleared up by Rutte.

But how can Mette F. fail to attend a summit that could decide the fate of the Commonwealth?

In an interview with journalists in Florida, he says he will talk about buying Greenland because he believes Denmark cannot protect the island itself.

“We have to have the island. They have to get this done. They can’t protect it. Denmark are wonderful people. I know the leaders, they’re very good people, but they won’t even go to the island,” Trump told reporters in Florida on Monday night.

On Monday, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that he has already spoken to Trump about Greenland and that he looks forward to meeting the president when the World Economic Forum (WEF) meets in Davos this week. On the same day, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) said he would be travelling to Davos on Wednesday.

“In light of the situation that has arisen with the US threatening to raise tariffs on Norway and selected other countries, it is important for me to be present, be clear about Norway’s position and work for Norwegian interests,” Støre told Dagens Næringsliv on Monday.

Trump told journalists in Florida on Monday evening that European leaders will not put up much resistance to his attempt to buy Greenland.
