The influx of illegal migrants arriving in small boats and staying in UK hotels will set new records in 2025. The vast majority of those arriving are young, single men and this has had consequences for the safety of the country’s small towns, where crime has soared.
A new, self-organised vigilante group called the Safeguard Force began patrolling Bournemouth on England’s south coast this week, following what many residents are describing as a dramatic deterioration in safety in the town.

In recent months alone, there have been mass brawls on the beaches, several incidents of violence and a rape in a beachside public toilet.
– The police are never here when we need them. On weekend nights it can be complete chaos,” says local resident Terry Keenan.
Over 200 volunteers – including former soldiers, security officers and first responders – have joined the group, established by local businessman Gary Bartlett. The aim, according to Bartlett, is to “protect the most vulnerable – especially women, children and the elderly”.
The National Guard has raised over £6,000 through a fundraising campaign to buy body cameras, staff vests and radios. Volunteers will wear uniforms with “Safeguard Force” printed on the back.
“We’re extra eyes and ears in the community, deterring anti-social behaviour and alerting the police or other authorities,” says Bartlett. He emphasises that the group does not engage in illegal actions and that its members have no more legal powers than other citizens.
