A juvenile assailant armed with two knives attacked a security guard at the Israeli embassy in Belgrade in the early hours of Wednesday morning whilst shouting “Allahu akbar!”, reports The Jerusalem Post.
The attacker was killed in the attack, whilst the security guard sustained minor injuries, according to the police.
Serbia’s Interior Minister Ivica Dacic says that the police had raised the terror alert level to ‘Red’, the highest level, and increased their presence at vulnerable locations, according to the Associated Press.
The young terrorist was on the authorities’ radar as an IS supporter.
Dacic pointed out that the security services had been monitoring the suspect prior to the attack.
“Based on the information we have had access to so far, he was known as a supporter of the Islamic State. On his Instagram profile, there was a black flag and symbols associated with the organisation,” he said, according to the Associated Press.
Places symbolising Israel or Judaism are potential targets for Islamic terrorists across Europe.
Muslims make up approximately 4 per cent of the population in Serbia. History, not least the wars in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, casts a long shadow over relations between Serbs and Muslims.
